Benzodiazepine Use Disorder

Stepwell Care offers robust medical and clinical support for individuals struggling with Benzodiazepine Use Disorder (BUD) which involves the misuse of benzodiazepines (sometimes referred to as "benzos") which are a class of medications prescribed for anxiety, insomnia and other conditions. Examples of benzodiazepines include Xanax, Klonopin, Valium, Ativan and more. Signs that you or your loved one is struggling with BUD may include:

  • Physical Symptoms: Excessive sleepiness or sedation, impaired coordination leading to clumsiness and/or accidents, slurred speech, memory problems, blurred vision, dizziness and more.

  • Mood Swings: Unstable mood, irritability, and/or aggression.

  • Cognitive Impairment: Problems with thinking, concentration, and/or decision-making.

  • Anxiety and Depression: Paradoxically, long-term excessive use can worsen anxiety and depression.

  • Doctor Shopping: Visiting multiple doctors to obtain more prescriptions.

  • Taking Higher Doses: Using higher doses than prescribed and running out of the prescription earlier than the length of time it's written for, and/or increased frequency of using the medication.

  • Cravings: Strong desire and/or compulsion to use benzodiazepines.

  • Neglecting Responsibilities and/or Social Withdrawal: Ignoring duties and work, school or home and/or isolating from friends and family.

Treating Benzodiazepine Use Disorder involves a comprehensive approach that addresses physical, psychological, and social aspects of the disease. Stepwell Care offers flexible, personalized care for individuals struggling with all stimulants. We'll help you to develop a treatment plan tailored to fit your needs, preferences and schedule. Treatment options include:

  • Outpatient/Ambulatory Detox: Our nationally accredited outpatient (ambulatory) detoxification program can help you to develop the best path forward such as a gradual tapering to minimize withdrawal symptoms and/or whether other medications may be appropriate to manage your symptoms or address co-occurring conditions.

  • Individual and Group Therapy: We offer both in-person and online programs that include structured therapy sessions for up to 5 days per week to support your recovery, address ongoing challenges, develop strategies to cope with triggers and high-risk situations, and more.

  • Types of Therapies: Certain types of behavioral therapies may be more effective than others when treating benzodiazepine use disorder. Examples include Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help you recognize and change negative thought patterns and behaviors associated with benzodiazepine use and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) which focuses on skill-building to manage emotions, cope with stress and improve relationships. We'll help you find the right care plan and associated therapies and treatment that fit your needs.

  • Community Support: Upon discharge, Stepwell Care clients have access to free groups on a weekly basis, offered both online and in-person in perpetuity.
